đA Keepsake Full of Warmth and Memory
A beautifully hand-painted 1970s Russian lacquer brooch, crafted on a lightweight wooden base and signed on the back by the artist. The scene depicts a graceful troika carriage in motion â figures vivid, horses elegantly posed, and every brushstroke rendered with that unmistakable Russian storytelling charm.
â About Russian Lacquer Art
The period from the 1950s to 1980s is considered the golden age of Russian lacquer miniature art. Most surviving vintage brooches in the market today were created during this era.
The craft draws its roots from Russian icon painting. After the fall of Imperial Russia, many icon painters turned to making lacquered papier-maché boxes, panels and jewellery, carrying over their meticulous brushwork and strong narrative style.
Among the four major centres â Fedoskino, Palekh, Kholui and Mstera â techniques matured and diversified:
. Fedoskino pieces often feature oil paints and soft realism,
. while Palekh is known for its deep black lacquer base, fine linework and gilded details.
These techniques were also used in brooch making, creating small yet expressive works of art.
â Collectorâs Note
This brooch is signed by its artist â many of whom were formally trained and have documented works within Russiaâs lacquer art tradition. The imagery is lively and full of movement, the colours rich, and the craftsmanship unmistakably from the height of the lacquer-painting era.
The wooden base keeps the piece light and easy to wear. Condition is very good for its age, with only a small line of edge crack visible â a gentle reminder of its decades-long journey.
A charming, story-filled treasure for collectors of Russian folk art, lacquer miniatures or expressive hand-painted jewellery.
đIâve always loved vintage treasures, drawn to their quiet beauty and stories.
From my small studio, I carefully select and care for each piece, alongside a few simple handmade charms.
Every item is handled, photographed, and wrapped by me with gentle attention â a little wish to share beauty with you.
