⭐ About Shell Cameo Craft
While hardstone cameos were the earliest form, shell carving began to flourish during the Renaissance (15th–16th century). Mussel and cowry shells were used to create the classic light-on-dark reliefs that defined early European cameo artistry.

By the mid-18th century, the arrival of helmet shells from the West Indies and queen conch shells from the Caribbean sparked a new wave of cameo production. Shell proved wonderfully workable for fine detail, and from the Victorian era onward — especially after 1850 — carved cameos became beloved tokens of travel, cherished souvenirs of the Grand Tour.
